Formerly, Wheeler served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Gables Residential Trust, a publicly traded REIT which specialized in the development and management of multifamily residences.  Gables had a market cap in excess of $3 billion on the New York Stock Exchange.

He previously served as Group Managing Partner for Trammell Crow Residential where he oversaw their multifamily residential operations throughout the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.  Prior to this he was responsible for the management and development of a 22 million SF industrial portfolio for Trammell Crow Company’s Houston Industrial Division and oversaw the South Florida commercial operations which consisted of more than 3 million SF of office, retail and industrial space.

In addition to Wheeler’s real estate experience, he has managed the transition of two public-private entity transactions.  In 1998 he took his Trammell Crow Residential regional company public through a reverse merger with Gables Residential Trust.  Following this, in 2005, he handled the sale of Gables Residential Trust to ING Clarion in a multi-billion dollar transaction, effectively taking the company private.
